Mr. Steffen is a Managing Director in the corporate restructuring practice of Province. An expert in accounting, finance, valuation, solvency and damages analyses, he has served as a consulting and testifying expert, and led investigations, for holders of interests and claims in disputes involving mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and restructurings in excess of $240B. Matters in which he has consulted or testified have included antitrust and competition policy, appraisal, bankruptcy and restructuring, bribery, corruption and financial statement fraud, breach of contract, intellectual property, international trade and arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, securities and utility regulation.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Steffen has consulted for numerous privately owned and publicly traded enterprises as well as governmental agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The industries in which he has consulted include aerospace, aggregates, asbestos, automotive, batteries, beef processing, biotechnology, business services, cable network, chemical, consumer product, construction, defense, document management, electronic imaging, financial services & banking, food & beverage, genomics, healthcare, HVAC, independent power, information technology, insurance, internet, newspaper, magazine, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, paper and industrial packaging, printing, pumps & controls, plumbing, real estate, retail, securities, semiconductor, software, steel, telecom, tobacco, electric utility and water. Prior to entering the consulting field, he worked in finance with Inland Steel Industries, Inc., antitrust with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Competition and in corporate development with U.S. Generating, Inc.
Mr. Steffen earned a Master of Management degree with specializations in accounting and finance from the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in finance, and Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance, from DePaul University. He holds the Certified Public Accountant (Virginia License # 46485), Accredited Senior Appraiser, Accredited in Business Valuation, Certificate in Distressed Business Valuation and Chartered Global Management Accountant certifications. He has lectured for the American University Washington College of Law and University of San Diego School of Law and spoken at conferences and or authored articles published by the American Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute, Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, Financier Worldwide, International Legal Alliance Summit & Awards, Law360.com and National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Mr. Steffen is the President-Elect and member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, a past Co- Chair of the Appraisal & Valuation Sub-Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation, Expert Witness Committee, a Co-Editor of the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors Journal, and a Co- coordinating Editor of the Value & Cents column of the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal.
An experienced trumpet player, band leader, song writer, and arranger, Mr. Steffen has also shared the stage and screen with recording stars including Anthony Newley, Steve Allen, Paul Anka, Lucille Ball, Milton Berle, Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis, Jr., Billy Eckstein, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Mitzi Gaynor, Bob Hope, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Liberace, Henry Mancini, Manhattan Transfer, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Liza Minnelli, Red Skelton, Donna Summer, The Spinners, The Stylistics, Temptations, Mel Torme, Ray Bolger, Robert Merrill, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Andy Williams, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Carol Channing and Lauren Bacall, among many others.
